Where do we meet?  This spring our classes will meet at the beautifully appointed Brookhaven at Lexington,in Lexington, Massachusetts, an affiliate of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute with its state of the art conference rooms and easy accessibility off of WalthamStreet and convenient parking.

 

When:  Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. March 21-May 9, 2012

 

What's the syllabus look like? 

  • Weeks 1 and 2-Puritans in England: English Reformation, Tudor and Stuart monarchs, Calvin, Geneva Bible

  • Weeks 3 and 4- Puritans Leave Home:  Dorchester Company, Massachusetts Bay Charter, John Winthrop and others

  • Weeks 5 and 6- Puritans in the New World: Antinomian crisis, Roger Williams, Quakers, Merchants and Slaves

  • Week 7- Puritans Fall From Grace:  Hawthorne and Beyond

    Week 8 is a guided walking tour of 17th century Boston with instructor portraying Ann Vassall in Where Did the Puritans Go?

What do we do in class? Each class lasts two hours.  The first consists of an illustrated lecture and handouts by the insturctor.  The second hour will be a round table diiscussion led by the class on a book or chapters from a book pertaining to that week's topic.
